Freshwater and Climate Solutions Lab
What we do
The FCS Lab explores freshwater ecology and climate adaptation and mitigation through an interdisciplinary lens. We draw on diverse knowledge systems and engage across sectors, combining quantitative and qualitative methods to understand the fundamental ecosystem processes that shape people-nature relationships in aquatic systems and the built environment. Our research informs decision-making on sustainable solutions for water, energy, and food security.
Freshwater Ecology
Using fieldwork, geospatial tools, and ecological models, we quantify how global environmental change is reshaping fish communities and fish-habitat relationships.
Climate Adaptation and Mitigation
Through community engagement, we co-develop decision-support tools that inform climate adaptation planning and pathways to energy transformation.
Indigenous Land and Water Governance
Our research supports decision-making in Indigenous land and water governance, guided by responsible dialogue and relationships grounded in relationality and reciprocity.
UBC Forestry & Environmental Stewardship is located at UBC’s Point Grey campus on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Territory. We acknowledge the culture, history, and traditions of the Musqueam and other Indigenous Peoples who have stewarded this land and its forests for millennia. We are grateful to learn, research, and work inside the beautiful Forest Sciences Centre in Vancouver, in our research forests in Maple Ridge and Williams Lake, on Haida Gwaii, and in numerous locations around the world.
